Chapter 10
Hebrews 10:1-38
A SUPERIOR SACRIFICE
(God's final word; better than angels, Moses, Aaron; a better rest; a better covenant; a better sanctuary;
ALL DEPEND UPON A BETTER SACRIFICE)(Heb 10:1)
1. The need for a better sacrifice - vv. 1-4
a. Shadow of good things to come = shadows can only imitate, picture, not do
b. Everything done under the old covenant was a type, not the reality
(Heb 10:2)
c. Sheer logic dictates that sacrifices which must be offered over and over again do not offer any .permanent help or hope.
(Heb 10:3)
d. Forgiveness for individual sins was given, but the guilt of sin was not erased - cf. Lev 4:20,26,31,35
(Heb 10:4)
e. Animal blood could cover the sins and postpone judgment, but it could never provide a once-for-all redemption.
(Heb 10:5)
2. The provision of the better sacrifice - vv. 5-9 (Psalm 40:6-8)
a. All sacrifices and offerings under the Law were never accepted nor intended to be accepted by God as full payment for sin.
b. Neither were sacrifices and offerings accepted as a covering for sin apart from obedient hearts. cf. 1 Sam 15:22
c. “comes into the world” = the incarnation
d. Psalm 40:6 - “my ears have You opened” = interpreted by the Holy Spirit as a body ready for service.
e. The will He came to do, the Father's will, was the establishment of the New Covenant
(Heb 10:10)
3. The effectiveness of the better sacrifice - v. 10
a. Christ's sacrifice sanctifies the believer finally and completely (position)
b. Old Covenant worshipers had to be purified from ceremonial uncleanness repeatedly.
(Heb 10:11)
4. The better sacrifice need not be repeated - vv. 11-18
a. “stands” vs. “sat down” - cf. 1:3,13; 8:1 = proof of finished work
b. “right hand” = the place of exaltation and victory, power and authority
c. Because those who are sanctified by His blood are “perfected for ever” - cf. Col 2:10
d. As witnessed by the Holy Spirit in Jeremiah 31:33-34
(1) A new nature
(2) No more remembrance of sins
(3) Complete forgiveness and removal of guilt
e. Therefore, no more sacrifice for sin
(Heb 10:18) “When a sinner trusts Christ, his sins are forgiven, the guilt is gone, and the matter is settled forever.” - cf. John 13:10; 1 John 1:7
5. The Better Sacrifice opens the way to God
a. A threefold invitation
(1) Let us draw near - vv. 19-22
(a) With boldness (without fear) by His blood - v. 19
(b) By a new and living way - v.20
[1] Not a part of the old, ready to vanish
[2] Because He ever lives
[3] Made possible by His death
[4] An open invitation
(c) Through our Great High Priest - v. 21
(d) Sincerely, by faith, with the blood of Christ applied within, and an obedient testimony without - v. 22
(2) Let us hold fast - v. 23
(a) To the hope (faith) we have in Christ
[1] Of glory - 2:10 (cf. Col 1:27)
[2] Of the heavenly calling - 3:1 (cf. Titus 1:2; 3:7)
[3] Of Christ's return - 9:28 (cf. Titus 2:13)
[4] Of the heavenly city - 13:14
(b) Without wavering = not even leaning
(c) Because God's faithfulness assures the promise
(3) Let us consider one another - vv. 24-25
(a) Fellowship with God includes fellowship with His people; it must never become selfish.
(b) “Ask not what the church can do for you. Ask what you can do for the church.”
(c) Regular, faithful, unselfish fellowship encourages others to love and good works, too. MUTUAL ENCOURAGEMENT!!!
(d) More, not less, in view of the imminent return of the Lord.
b. A solemn warning - vv. 26-31
(1) Under the Old Covenant, there was no sacrifice for presumptuous sin. Those who committed such sins were subject to
execution.(2) Neither does the blood of Jesus deliver one from the physical consequences of such sins.
(3) Sins against knowledge are grievous in the sight of God. Such an attitude will bring His severe
discipline. If there is no such discipline, it proves no salvation. cf. Heb 12:8NOTE: 10:27 - “devour the adversaries” = as with Israel, God's people who repeatedly disobey Him in the face of His word and warnings, will be severely disciplined, a discipline that would destroy them, as it does His enemies, if they were not His people with whom He has made a covenant.
c. An encouraging word - vv. 32-39
(1) Remember when you first trusted the Lord - vv. 32-34
(a) How you endured personal afflictions - v. 32
(b) How you stood by others who were afflicted - v. 33
(c) How you hoped in God's promise of eternal life and goods - v. 34
(2) Continue in that same confidence - v. 35
(3) Be patient - v. 36 - cf. 6:12,15
(4) Believe Scripture - v. 37 - cf. Hab 2:3-4 (“tarry” = be late)
(5) Live by faith - v. 38 - cf. 11:6
(6) “perdition” = Gk. = loss, spiritual., physical, eternal; may = “waste” - v. 39
