Chapter 1
Hebrews 1:1-14
Important words in Hebrews:
1. “Better” - used to show the superiority of Jesus Christ and His salvation over the Hebrew system of religion -- than angels (1:4); hope (7:19); testament (7:22); covenant , promises (8:6); sacrifices (9:23); substance (property, goods, wealth) in heaven (10:34); country (11:16); resurrection (11:35); thing (11:40)
2. “Perfect” - meaning perfect standing before God. -- Law made nothing perfect (7:19); sacrifices could not make perfect (9:9 & 10:1); Christ's one offering has perfected for ever those who are sanctified (10:14); just men made perfect (12:23)
3. “Eternal” - salvation (5:9); redemption (9:12); inheritance (9:15); Spirit (9:14); Jesus Christ (13:8)
(Heb 1:2) “Heir of all things”; cf. the status of those who trust in Him - Rom 8:17, joint-heirs with Christ ; Gal 3:29, heirs according to the promise ; Titus 3:7, heirs according to the hope of eternal life ; Heb 1:14, heirs of salvation ; James 2:5, heirs of the kingdom ; 1 Peter 3:7, heirs of the grace of life
* “made the worlds” = cf. John 1:3; Colossians 1:16,17 - the Agent and the Goal and the sustainer of creation
*cf. Colossians 1:18 - Head (Source and Leader) of the church; preeminent in all things
(Heb 1:3) “glory” = like the rays of the sun, the glory of Christ cannot be separated from the nature of God.
* “express image” = exact imprint; exact representation of the very substance of God. “He that has seen Me has seen the Father.” John 14:9
* “upholding” = holding and carrying from one place to another as in total control, guiding, directing; not holding up as a burden. “By Him all things consist.” Col 1:17b
* “by Himself” = 1. He alone bore our sins and thus is alone able to cleanse them; there is no “co-redeemer”; 2. He was forsaken by the Father, without help, and was thus alone in the matter of redemption.
* “sat down” = His redeeming work finished
* “right hand” = place of authority and power
(Heb 1:4) Theme of Hebrews = The Superiority of Christ and His salvation to the Law of Moses
*Angels and the Law - cf. Deut 33:2; Psalm 68:17; Acts 7:53; Gal 3:19
*1:4-14 = SCRIPTURE DECLARES CHRIST TO BE BETTER THAN ANGELS
(Heb 1:5) Psalm 2:7 - cf. Acts 13:33 & Rom 1:4; 2 Sam 7:14-16 - refers first to Solomon, but ultimately to Jesus, “the greater than Solomon” (Mat 12:42).
*Angels may be called “sons of God”, as in Job 1:6, but none of them is called “the Son of God”.
(Heb 1:6) Deu 32:43 LXX = “Heavens, rejoice with Him, let the sons of God pay homage to Him.”
*Psa 97:7 = “gods” = angels; “Him” = God = thus Christ incarnate
*More proof He is God for angels would not be commanded to worship a mere creature. cf. Rev 19:10; 22:8-9
(Heb 1:7) Psalm 104:4
(Heb 1:8) vv. 8,9 = Psalm 45:6,7
(Heb 1:9) “fellows” = humanity cf. Phil 2:9-11
(Heb 1:10) vv. 10-12 = Psalm 102:25-27
(Heb 1:13) Psalm 110:1
(Heb 1:14) Angels are God's servants, doing His will at His command, serving those who are saved. How??? BUT DON'T LOSE THE THEME - JESUS cf. Col 2:18
